Pernille Brostrup, Co-Founder of Mabel Life; The Interview

Wellbeing 02Rebecca O'ByrneComment

Mabel Life is redefining the conversation around women's health, mental well-being, + the power of psychedelics. Founded in The Netherlands by sisters + co-founders, Pernille + Carolina Brostrup, Mabel isn’t just a wellness brand — it’s a movement. Rooted in the belief that nature holds the key to deeper healing, Mabel offers a fresh approach to microdosing and functional mushrooms, bridging the gap between science, self-discovery, and holistic well-being.

At its core, Mabel is designed for women seeking clarity, balance, + empowerment. From their thoughtfully crafted mushroom-based formulas to their guided microdosing programs, the brand is pioneering a new way to approach mental health — one that is gentle, intentional, + deeply personal. With an emphasis on education + accessibility, Mabel is shifting perspectives, breaking down stigma, + helping women reclaim their well-being on their own terms.

Here, I speak with Pernille to explore her journey, the vision behind Mabel, + how she sees psychedelics playing a role in the future of women’s health.

HSF — What inspired you to start Mabel Life? Was there a personal experience that led you to explore microdosing as a path to healing?

PB — Yes, as you know life doesn’t always turn out the way you expect + by my late 30s, I found myself a solo mom, trying to figure things out in a foreign country. I had spent years running on empty, exhausted, anxious, + feeling completely disconnected from myself. I tried everything, pharmaceuticals, alternative treatments, therapy etc, but nothing really helped. Then I came across microdosing with truffles containing psilocybin + something profoundly shifted for me.

My first microdose wasn’t some life-changing moment, but the world suddenly felt a little lighter, like I was more in sync with it. Over time, I realized it was doing something no other treatment had, it wasn’t just masking symptoms, it was working on a deeper level. It was helping me reconnect with myself. And that’s really what Mabel is about: finding a way back to yourself, especially for women, who are so often overlooked when it comes to real solutions for well-being.

HSF — Psychedelics have been used for centuries in indigenous traditions — how do you see Mabel bridging ancient wisdom with modern wellness?

PB — This is something I think about a lot. The way these plant medicines, these entheogens, were traditionally used in healing rituals is so deeply rooted in cultures + structures that are very different from the world we live in today. Even though I wish things were structured differently, I don’t think anyone can truly claim to honor those traditions in the exact way they were meant to be. I do, + we do as a company, try to educate ourselves as much as possible, keeping these stories in the back of our minds. But translating how they worked with these medicines into today’s society is incredibly difficult.

That said, one thing we are deeply committed to is reclaiming the role women once held, as healers, as caretakers, as guides for their families + communities. That kind of wisdom + empowerment has been eroded over generations, + I believe it’s time to take it back. If there’s a way we’re honoring those who came before us, it’s in that mission, helping women regain their agency, their intuition, + their ability to heal, not just themselves but the world around them.

HSF — The mainstream narrative around mental health all too often revolves around pharmaceutical solutions — how do you view microdosing as a form of personal empowerment in contrast to the conventionally available treatments?

PB — Pharmaceuticals like classical antidepressants are mostly about managing symptoms, not actually fixing the root cause. And let’s be honest, they were never designed for long-term well-being. They keep people dependent, often with a long list of side effects. Microdosing, on the other hand, works differently. It doesn’t do the work for you, but it helps you step up for yourself. It gently pushes you to take an active role in your healing. It doesn’t numb you out; it wakes you up.

HSF — As we said, many people struggling with mental health are prescribed pharmaceuticals as the default solution — often within a system that simply doesn’t support the individual, allowing for little more than a 3-minute conversation with a GP who doesn’t specialise in the area. Why do you think microdosing offers a more holistic + sustainable alternative?

I really do believe most GPs are trying their best. The problem is the system itself. One, we’re in the middle of a mental health crisis — more people than ever need help. Secondly, psychiatry hasn’t had a real breakthrough since SSRIs (antidepressants) hit the market decades ago. Let’s be honest too, in general, doctors are overwhelmed + barely have time to scratch the surface. And feeling unwell is usually a mix of many things — loneliness, stress, burnout, hormonal imbalances — but there’s no quick solution for that in a 10-minute appointment.

So, what can they do? Tell people to change their entire lifestyle? That’s not realistic. And this is where microdosing becomes so powerful, not because it "fixes" everything, but because it shifts the way you experience life.

From a scientific perspective:

  • Serotonin & the 5-HT2A receptor – Psilocybin mimics serotonin + stimulates the 5-HT2A receptor, which plays a key role in mood, creativity, + emotional balance. Unlike antidepressants that mainly increase serotonin levels, psilocybin works dynamically, helping people feel more connected + present.

  • Default Mode Network (DMN) & mental ruts – The DMN is like the brain’s autopilot for repetitive thoughts. When it’s overactive, it reinforces stress, anxiety, and negative loops. Microdosing gently slows down the DMN, making it easier to break old patterns and gain new perspectives, this is why many people describe it as "lifting a fog."

  • Neuroplasticity & emotional resilience – Microdosing encourages neuroplasticity, meaning it helps the brain adapt and rewire itself. Over time, this supports better emotional regulation and a greater sense of resilience.

Microdosing doesn’t numb you; it helps you engage more actively with life. It doesn’t push things under the rug, it brings them into the light, working with your body to create real, lasting change.

HSF — A lot of people feel trapped in the cycle of medication, side effects, + the resulting dependencies. How does microdosing break that pattern + allow people to take control of their own healing?

Psilocybin has the power to go beyond symptom management, it helps get to the root of things, shifting how we see + navigate life. That’s the real gift of this earth medicine: in a way, it sets you free. Microdosing isn’t about numbing or avoiding. It helps people tune in, become more aware, + naturally shift their habits, taking better care of themselves, listening to their needs, + making real changes.

But healing isn’t always easy. Even with tiny doses, there can be tough days, memories surfacing, feeling tired or overwhelmed. That’s part of clearing out years of mental clutter. The difference is, this time, you’re facing it, not just covering it up.

HSF — Can you share a particularly powerful transformation story from someone using Mabel Life’s approach—especially someone who transitioned away from pharmaceuticals?

One of our first clients was a woman who had been on antidepressants for years. She was going through perimenopause, dealing with anxiety, and felt like she had lost all connection—to herself, to her family, to life. The meds dulled the worst of it, but they also dulled her—her emotions, her energy, even her connection with her husband and teenage sons.

Through the Mabel microdosing program, she slowly started tapering off her meds (with professional support, of course). Over time, her mood swings eased, her mind felt clearer, and she started feeling like herself again. But it wasn’t just about getting off medication—it was about coming back to life. She reconnected with her body, her sense of purpose, and the things that actually made her happy.

HSF — In the 1950s + early 60s, psychedelic research was showing immense promise for mental health, addiction, and trauma healing. Then, the War on Drugs effectively shut it all down. Where do you think we might be today had that research not been stopped?

Oh wow, that’s a big what if. If the research had continued, I honestly think we’d be living in a completely different world, one where healing isn’t just about selling pills. Women, especially, would have had way more options for mental health and hormonal balance instead of just being handed a prescription and told to deal with it.

Today hormonal health, perimenopause, menopause, the endless cycle of being put on antidepressants or HRT is the only option. Imagine if, instead of just medicating women through these huge transitions, we had spent decades actually researching what so many are discovering today, that microdosing can bring a major shift in well-being, in energy, in joy. That it can help women feel like themselves again, without numbing or overriding what their bodies are naturally going through. If we had that research to back up what thousands of women are already reporting, we’d be having a very different conversation right now.

HSF — Despite this suppression, we’re now seeing a renaissance of psychedelic research. What’s different about this moment in time, + how do we ensure history doesn’t repeat itself?

People are fed up. They’re done with the same old solutions that don’t work. There’s a massive push for change, + this time, we have the science to back it up. The challenge now is making sure psychedelics don’t just get swallowed up by big pharma. We need to focus on education, community access, + making sure these tools stay in the hands of the people, not just companies looking to patent + profit.

Psychedelic Therapy, What is It?

Wellbeing 02Rebecca O'ByrneComment

Beyond micro-dosing , which has become a frontrunner in the world of healing in the last few years, for those seeking alternatives to the big-pharma led industry of often toxic + unsuccessful drugs, psychedelic treatment in a therapeutic setting is a growing field that harnesses the power of psychedelic substances, such as psilocybin (found in magic mushrooms), MDMA, ketamine + others to help treat various mental health conditions. When administered in a carefully controlled, therapeutic + professional environment, these substances are used under the guidance of trained professionals to facilitate profound psychological healing + personal growth in individuals stuck in certain recurring cycles of depression, PTSD,

The use of psychedelics in a therapeutic context is not new. Indigenous cultures have long utilized plant medicines in ritualistic + healing practices. However, the modern resurgence of psychedelic therapy began in the mid-20th century + is now experiencing a significant revival as research into their potential therapeutic benefits accelerates. With studies being conducted by institutions all over the world from Johns Hopkins University + MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) to Kings College + Imperial College, both in London, psychedelic therapy is gaining rightful recognition as a legitimate + potentially transformative treatment for conditions like PTSD, depression, anxiety, addiction, trauma, eating disorders, OCD + more.

Among the psychedelics leading the way is ketamine, which has shown particular promise in treating treatment-resistant depression. Ketamine, originally developed as an anesthetic, has emerged as one of the most researched + widely used psychedelics in clinical settings. Unlike other psychedelics, ketamine is not classified as a classic hallucinogen; instead, it works by disrupting normal brain activity, creating a dissociative state that can help individuals break free from negative thought patterns + emotional blocks. When used therapeutically, ketamine has been shown to produce rapid antidepressant effects, often within hours of a single dose, which sets it apart from traditional antidepressants that may take weeks to show results — if at all. It has been especially effective for individuals with treatment-resistant depression, providing relief when other medications + therapies have failed.

What makes psychedelic therapy unique, particularly with substances like ketamine, is the deep, often life-changing experiences these substances can produce when used in a safe, supportive setting. Unlike traditional therapies that primarily focus on talk therapy + cognitive-behavioral techniques, psychedelic therapy creates an altered state of consciousness that can allow individuals to access parts of the mind that are difficult to reach through conventional methods which can often too take years to come even close to any form of actual healing. In this state, many experience a heightened sense of connection, intense introspection, + clarity, often leading to breakthroughs that can shift long-held emotional patterns + deep seated traumas.

The therapeutic process typically involves preparation, the guided psychedelic experience, + — most importantly, integration with a certified facilitator post the actual dose. During the preparation phase, therapists work with an individual to discuss their intentions, expectations, + potential challenges that may arise during the experience. The actual session takes place in a comfortable, safe environment where the individual consumes the psychedelic substance — be that through IM, IV or orally, depending on the prescribed method of the doctor —+ is guided through their journey by a trained therapist. This session can last several hours, + the therapist is present to provide support, reassurance, + guidance. Afterward, the integration phase is crucial for helping the individual process the experience, reflect on insights gained, + ultimately how best to incorporate these lessons into daily life so as to make long-lasting change.

One of the key benefits of psychedelic therapy — whatever the choice of journey, especially though with substances like ketamine, is its ability to help individuals confront + process deep-rooted trauma in a way that feels more accessible + transformative. For those with treatment-resistant depression or PTSD, traditional therapies may not always be effective, + psychedelic therapy offers a promising alternative. Psychedelics, including ketamine, have been shown to have neuroplastic effects, meaning they can stimulate the brain's ability to form new neural connections, potentially rewiring negative thought patterns + behaviors which can take years + so much energetic + financial investment over years + years.

Moreover, the use of psychedelics in therapy can foster a sense of interconnectedness + spiritual awakening, leading to profound shifts in perspective - something very difficult to truly grasp in conventional methods of therapy or medicine. This can be particularly helpful for individuals struggling with existential questions, grief, or a lack of meaning in life. For those who have fought for a long time to survive what haunts them, it can be not onlylfie changing but life saving. The experience often helps individuals realize that their struggles are part of a larger whole, offering a sense of healing that extends beyond the individual self or the struggles they face.

As research continues to unfold, psychedelic therapy — particularly with ketamine — is poised to become an important tool in the mental health landscape. It is definitely not a panacea, + it’s essential that it is approached with care, responsibility, + proper support in environments that are legal + professional. Yet, for those seeking deeper healing, it promise a new frontier in the treatment of mental health, providing a path toward self-discovery, emotional release, + lasting change.

For more resources + research articles, I find Dr. Michelle Weiner in the US an incredible wealth of knowledge + pioneer in the space. Other amazing resources include: Mabel Life (Micro-dosing Pioneers in Europe), Michael Pollan (his book How to Change Your Mind was one I read many year ago + is where I was first introduced to the topic), Dr. Andrew Weil (a wealth of knowledge on mushrooms for healing), The Synthesis Institute (a retreat hosting company in Amsterdam who also have great information to share).

Biologique Recherche; A Longtime Love Affair

Wellbeing 02Rebecca O'ByrneComment

Disclousre : I have been gifted the experience of three facials with this brand.

Like each of us as beings, our skin is such a uniquely individualised part of who we are. As unique almost as our very DNA, it’s something we have to take care of, not just from an aesthetics perspective but from a whole 360, internal + external point-of-view.

Something I find so strange + completely off-putting in life is the blanket approach sold to us all as though we’re literally all the same people with the same problems that the same, simplified solutions will fix. The truth is that beauty + skincare are easy, quick sells for many creators + so much money + product is wasted on skin that needs something that speaks directly to it’s own precise needs instead of to millions of people all at the same time. Not all ‘hero’ products are for everyone regardless of what we’re told. From influencers sharing their ‘favourite’ products to brands promising a life-changing experience in that one size fits all product they are trying to get you to buy, it’s so tiring + quite frankly feels so hollow when actually wanting to see legit results instead of wasting your time + money. The reality is, we have to do the work ourselves to find what works, there are no quick fixes in anything.

Hands up, I get sold to too. Of course I do. I’ve wasted money + time on products that were meant to be amazing for ‘all skin types’ yet sit in my bathroom unfinished. But back in 2018/2019 when I sought to become a little more educated in what my skin actually needed itself, I went to a spa in Dublin who works with renowned French skincare brand Biologique Recherche to offer their facials as I’d heard such amazing things about Biologique from a few trusted friends. It was then that I learned more about how unique each of our skin really is + how just because everyone might be talking about Vitamin C products today or Retinols tomorrow, it does NOT mean I need those too. Nor might you. It’s actually pretty obvious but I had been using a cocktail of pretty much whatever I was sent by brands at the time or thought was supposed to work for so long that I have overlooked the idea of getting a bespoke routine tailored for my individualised needs; something I very much value in every area of well-being is the practice of seeking out what works for the individual, less prescribed by the media or creators constantly selling to us. However, needless to say, I fell in love with Biologique Recherche from the start + have been using their products ever since.

Stepping into anything of the world of BiologiqueRecherche is soothing from every direction, from the skin to the soul. While using it at home has been an absolute staple along with different facials from other retailers + spas in Dublin + around Ireland, a super treat is always that when I travel I tend to seek out a local stockist, having been lucky enough to have experiences in both their Paris + Stockholm Embassy's - New York is next on my list when it opens next Spring; I was there this month + it’s looking set to be just as wow as you’d imagine, right in the heart of SoHo. And while this isn’t an exclusive brand for me to the literal enth degree - I fully love different facials with a couple of wonderful facialists who I return to + love + have tried many other brands for my skin - equally truthful is the fact that Biologique Recherche has remained a firm + trusted essential within my daily routine since we became acquainted all those years ago. Being back fully engaged with the brand morning + night the past few months, I have been gifted a series of three monthly facials with their National Trainer Vera Blok who is like an angel skin specialist, I can’t help but share the deep + long love I have for the brand + an appreciation I hold dearly to be working with them this season when they’ve been something I’ve personally purchased (so) many times over.

The brand is grounded in the philosophy of respecting the skin’s natural processes with a very distinct approach that emphasises an understanding + appreciation of each individual’s unique skin condition at each specific moment in time, rather than categorising skin into static types which I think is all too often what goes wrong as we are often many types all at once. I love this as skin changes so much, not only in our lifetime but with seasons, environments, stress levels, life circumstances, hormones, + our internal wellbeing which also ebbs + flows as much as the ocean. The formulations are highly concentrated, incorporating raw, active ingredients without unnecessary additives like artificial fragrances (IYKYK… amirite?). This results in potent products designed to restore the skin’s health + balance. Biologique Recherche was founded in the 1970s by the Allouche family — a biologist, a physiotherapist, + a doctor who, through innovation + a respect for the truest act of our biology, cultivated a reputation for delivering results that are as transformative as they are enduring.

While, along with my own philosophy of being really conscious about not prescribing to an audience what they should do as I can only seek to find + speak to what works for me + share with you more broadly, I don’t feel it’s appropriate to share the specific products I use as what your skin needs will be entirely different to mine, yet I can’t recommend enough treating yourself or a loved one, where you can, to a Biologique Recherche experience in one of their HQ’s or associated spas + delving into a journey of understanding your own specific needs, finding a new relationship to + confidence in the skin you’re in.

Something of importance to note too is the brands Irish distributors Real Skin Solutions who very beautifully have partnered with the charity ‘Wellness for Cancer’ whereby they offer those going through cancer treatment a 90 minute complimentary experience in their elegant HQ in Dublin City Centre. Carried out by highly qualified therapists, the treatment incorporates the best of gentle, therapeutic techniques, designed by Wellness for Cancer to be skin-appropriate for highly sensitive skin. You can find out more + book a spot by contacting megan.byrne@realskinsolutions.ie.

You can find a full list of where to book in something fabulous, wherever you are in the world, with Biologique Recherche here.

What Is.. Grounding

Grounding — also known as earthing — is older than anything we know or can imagine with our modern minds. Our bodies, however, know exactly what it is + why it works. At first, it might sound incredibly woo-woo or hippie, but I’ve found, + continue to find, it to be incredibly beneficial. It’s something I often instinctually crave, like something your being can’t quite put into words, yet can’t help but answer to it’s deep pull towards connection, peace, + balance.

Grounding is simply about reconnecting to the Earth, allowing our bodies to absorb its natural energy by walking barefoot on the soil, grass, sand, or even lying down in a patch of green. In this practice, we release the charge of modern living — those constant digital stimuli + everyday stresses — in order to realign with the rhythms of nature. It feels like shedding a weight you didn't know you were carrying or perhaps a weight of which you are all too aware of.

Scientific studies show that grounding has a profound impact on our well-being. Research has demonstrated that direct contact with the Earth can reduce inflammation, improve sleep quality, + lower stress levels. The Earth’s surface contains a subtle but significant negative charge, which can help neutralize free radicals in the body, reducing oxidative stress. This helps to lower the risk of chronic illnesses + promotes overall healing. In addition, grounding has been shown to reduce cortisol levels — our stress hormone — allowing the body to enter a more relaxed state.

For me, it's almost meditative in a way. It’s not just about standing on the earth, but about presence + surrendering to the simplicity of the moment. The fresh air, the cool ground beneath, the sounds of nature around me — it feels like a reminder that I am, + always have been, part of something much bigger. It’s a form of stillness where one can find clarity, release tension, + heal, both physically + emotionally.

Incorporating grounding into my routine has grounded my thoughts + intentions too. It’s as though it recalibrates my energy, bringing me back to what matters most: balance, health, + connection to the Earth + myself. Whether I’m grounding on a morning walk or simply pausing to touch the earth when I feel overwhelmed, it’s a practice that gently nudges me toward alignment + I find that in these simple moments, my soul reconnects with the larger rhythm of life.

You can discover more about the practice of Grounding + it’s benefits, both spiritually + scientifically in the documentary

June Musings

Life 02, Wellbeing 02Rebecca O'ByrneComment

Welcome back to my Monthly Musings series. A series in which I began back in October with great intentions, yet the very series, like so many of my great intentions that fell a little off track seeing as it’s six months later. However, I say this with a new found compassion toward myself. I am writing this from Miami where my husband + I are based for a couple of months while I receive a specific + progressive treatment for my health. I’m not ready to go into the details of this in depth yet but two treatments in, I am mind-blown by how I, for almost the past 30 years, was trying so desperately to exist with such high expectations of myself yet with little to no energy mentally, physically or spiritually to reach even a ‘normal’ state of being. It’s complicated + while I’ve shared a lot about my journey thus far in this life, I know that when I’m ready, I’ll continue to share in the hope it might help you or someone you love. However, for right now I’m just keeping focused.

The saying that the longest journey you’ll ever make is the one from your head to your heart feels so apt right now; a saying apt for almost every road in life. I’m having to be brave lately, brave with the solid intention of not so much ‘getting better’ but more maybe finding a new peace within that has been missing my whole life. Being brave to face into things, isn’t about not being afraid as yeah sure there’s fear but I’m finding that when you want something badly enough + reach points that touch on life or death, you’ll step into almost anything to find what works. Keeping doing what’s been done before brings no change. So here goes something new.

And hey beyond the philosophical, it’s my first time in Miami. I had a pre-conceived notion it might be a little tacky or sleazy if I’m honest but I am absolutely in love with the energy here. It’s warm, it’s sunny, the people are friendly, there are trees everywhere + we’re surrounded by the bay on one side the ocean on the other. The outdoorsy way of living in the warmth of the sun is something I’m realising more + more is actually one I love + can absolutely get behind. I usually love the cosiness of Winter along with the wardrobe the colder months require but the might be a new era of my life, the Summer loving one.

Until next time - maybe next month or maybe in six, who knows - I hope that whatever the road you find yourself on in this life you will choose to keep walking, or to crawl when walking feels too much.

Katie England, London's Skin Goddess

Travel, Wellbeing 02Rebecca O'ByrneComment

This past year while traveling over + back to London to see clients, I started seeing Katie England, the extraordinary facialist come all round beautiful human who.. let’s just say KNOWS skin like no one else I’ve ever met. My best friend introduced me to Katie’s brilliance who, for the past number of years, has held a residency at the Nomad Hotel in Covent Garden in London where clients travel from all over the world to book in for a Katie England experience.

In meeting Katie + understanding her ethos + energy I put my trust in her immediately. We have been working on my skin each time I’m in London + each time I realize I feel somewhat more confident now to leave the house sans makeup, it reinforces my belief that seeing Katie has become one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. As someone who has always felt incredibly uncomfortable in my skin, self-conscious of how red it can be, I am not joking when I say, I feel like that girl who actually glows when she comes out of a treatment - ok like relatively speaking to that girl but I feel better than I ever have.

Katie is more than a master of what she does though, she is one of the most beautiful souls; a gentle + kind presence that welcomes you into her world with an aura bursting with love for her clients + a passion for + knowledge of the far reaching + often highly-generalised topic of skin health. Understanding the complexity of lifestyles + the effect our entire lives can have on our skin, Katie delves deeper than anyone, knowing the health of our skin is about so much more than any one thing.

Thanks to BYONIK, Buccal, Lymphatic Drainage + Katie’s ever evolving mastery, the progress I’m beginning to feel with my skin is all thanks to Katie, her magic hands + expert recommendations. Working with many different approaches + techniques, Katies creates bespoke treatments for each client depending on your specific needs + skin goals, looking at your overall plan with the foundational knowing that there is no overnight success with anyone’s journey to healthier skin + that gaining confidence in it comes of course with the help of treatments but just as much the self-discipline to do the “homework” between sessions so that her work is even more beneficial when you’re in session with her.

I cannot recommend Katie enough + for you or anyone you know who can book in while in London, this is the perfect gift to yourself that will continue to feel good long after you admire your skin in the mirror.

Nadia Josse, The Interview

Wellbeing 02Rebecca O'ByrneComment

Think Winter 2020 - early 2021, in the midst of lockdown life, things were pretty bleak to say the least. While holding huge awareness of my immense privilege that I was safe + physically healthy, not forgetting the gratitude for the safety + wellbeing of my loved ones, I will admit that, like for millions of people the world over, it was a really moment where I needed to find new ways to stay well + on top of feeling good. Enter my introduction to Nadia Josse, cool-French-girl extraordinaire come breath-work practitioner, who upon realising I could actually attend her group classes from home here in Ireland (Nadia’s based in NYC), I booked right in + got my breath-work on. I’ve since attended, either live or on the recording sends out post the session, pretty much every group session she’s held along with some private 1:1s with Nadia who’s approach is kind + gentle with a technique that’s absolutely worth it’s weight in gold. On a personal level, it’s been a really powerful part of my collection of wellness tools over the past few years now + each time I work with Nadia, I go deeper + find that little bit more peace within. Here we speak about her journey into the space, how she sets herself up for success + what she does to get that glow.. (Nadia’s skin is the most glowing I’ve ever seen)

HSF — Nadia, what brought you to begin your journey toward the wellness space + specifically to this beautiful practice of breath-work?

NJ — Moving to NYC was a huge catalyst for me. I had to find an output and a way to ground myself. I found a yoga practice, which slowly led me into Reiki, meditation and lastly Breathwork.

HSF — Have you always been so passionate about your health or have there been challenges that afforded you a fresh perspective on what it means to feel good?

NJ — Yes I always nerded out on health books. I feel like in my 20’s I was trying to find myself. I tried a LOT of different modalities - I was vegan for a little bit, paleo, keto haha. I think my biggest challenge which eventually led me to really lean into a Breathwork practice was fertility and conceiving. I had to manage my stress, regulate my hormones and connect with my feminine energy.

HSF — As you know, I’m a huge believer in your breath-work, having worked with you on a 1:1 level + attending so many of your group sessions but for those new to your work, can you explain the specific modality of breath-work you use in your teachings..

NJ — I teach a method that really focuses on emotional release. David Elliot and Erin Telford were my teachers. It’s a heart opening practice. Some people call is 3 steps breathing. It’s a way to release stuck energy and trauma from the body , reconnect with your truth and strentghten your intuition.

HSF — How has breath-work impacted your life?

NJ — It’s changed my life but more than that it gave me confidence that I had the answers and the power to heal within me. I used to seek healers and gurus. People who would tell me what to do and who I was.

HSF — For those new to breath-work, where or how do you suggest someone to begin?

NJ — Start with one of my group classes and then if you want to go deeper you can do 1-1 sessions or even try on your own.

HSF — Your career appears quite demanding with a lot of travel + big industry events.. yet you manage to make it all look so chic + elegant. What tips can you give for a demanding schedule, especially with traveling between time zones?

NJ — I plan, I do lists. I set myself up for success. I also have non-negotiable in the morning that set up the foundations for my day. I wake up early, I journal, meditate (depending on the days I would do a combo of meditation and Breathwork or one only) and then I exercise. If I’m traveling I’ll adapt and try to do a shorter version of all this. But sometimes that doesn’t work and that’s ok. I get back on my routine and feel great.

HSF — What does your morning +/or nighttime routine look like?

MORNING—

Wake up - make coffee

Drink coffee / Journal

Meditation + Breathwork for 15 to 20 mins

Tracy Anderson Class in Tribeca (my favorite workout) I sweat like crazy and I love it.

Go home - cold shower, supplements (I take Lyma supplement, Cymbiotika Omega, B12 and D3)

Smoothie with plant protein, collagen (love Agent Nateur), Fiber (PaleoFiber), Creatine and L- Glutamine).

And then I head to work!

NIGHT —

I try to wind down early like 7:45.

I do my skincare

I turn on my red light in my room with peaceful sounds (love my Lotfie alarm).

I take magnesium and gaba

I turn on my BioMat and read on it for 20/25 mins.

I get into bed and sleep. I need the room to be VERY cold.

HSF — Let’s talk skin for one second.. yours is always glowing. Who or what are your secrets?

NJ — RED Light! Recently got the LYMA laser which I love. My facialist Cynthia Rivas (in NYC) uses Is Clinical products which I love. She has a very simple outlook on skin - no fluff no extra steps. KEEP IT SIMPLE! I see her once a month. Obviously I use retinol and SPF 365 days a year. IPL lasers and medical peels also helped my skin a lot.

HSF — What one product could you not live without?

NJ — Is Clinical Pro Heal serum and their face wash. It’s the best. I also love Bioderma micellar water. Oh + ELTA MD tinted SPF.

HSF — A quick (but important) note on your style - again, always so chic. What is your personal style philosophy + how do you build out / invest in your wardrobe each season?

NJ — I don’t buy any Zara, Mango or cheap clothes. I prefer to wait and invest in a VERY good piece that will last me forever. My style has evolved a lot over the years. I really want to buy pieces that are not the “trendy” thing and that will last through the years.

HSF — You’re one of the coolest people to follow on Instagram; a style connoisseur + wellness aficionado, all with a killer career + the cutest family. How do you switch off though? Do you find the pull of social media + always being turned on a challenge? Where do you find balance in doing it all?

NJ — I delete instagram from my phone from time to time and I take a break. Right now it is very difficult to be on. It’s taking a toll on my mental health so I only use it to promote my classes and try to stay away.

HSF — On a personal level, what do you hope to impart to those you teach + who’s lives you enlighten with your breath-work?

NJ — I just want for people to realize they can change and they hold so much power within. Breathwork is the ultimate tool for self discovery and self love.

HSF — The last book/ movie/ tv show/ podcast you loved?

Podcast: I love the Armchair Expert with Dax Sheppard. Such great convos.

Book: I’m currently reading the Fourth Wing

TV Show: Obsessed with a lot of shows - the last one I loved was Fleishman is in Trouble on Hulu

Movie: Triangle of Sadness

HSF — Your favourite piece of advice?

It’s not about you. So don’t take this personal.

HSF — Nadia, what has been your proudest moment to date?

NJ — The birth of my baby. Unmedicated, beautiful and chaotic.

HSF — What are you excited about for the future?

NJ — Continuing to teach, launching more online offerings and retreats.

October Musings

Life 02, Wellbeing 02Rebecca O'Byrne2 Comments

With a forward intention of beginning each month here on HAUTE so FABULOUS with an editors-style letter from me to you, a note on the theme of my thoughts, learnings, inspirations - a snapshot so to speak of each particular moment in time, I begin here today with my first monthly note in this Monthly Musings series. Thank you for being here, it is my wish that you find something that inspires you to feel less alone, something that - in whatever measure - enlivens your soul + evokes a sense of freedom to explore your own path more creatively invigorated. This is a place for me to learn + grow authentically, embracing all parts of me from the spiritually inclined to the Phoebe-Philo-launch-can't-come-fast-enough aspects of my being, in real time + where, most importantly, we can do that together.

I made it to my favourite reformer pilates class this morning + after a call with a potential new client, one whom I really hope it works out to work with as it just feels so Universally correct, I sit here writing this, cosy at home with the sound of raining pour heavily outside + my nice hot coffee (on tap) thanks to our new WILFA coffee maker which we are really loving. I might be one of a very tiny percentage of human beings alive who absolutely loves the fact that we are facing into what I consider to be the best time of year, the cosy promise of Autumn + Winter. I love this time of year + all that it represents; the assurance of restful hibernation + a nurturing safety blanket of intimate moments of home. The natural darkness or heaviness that comes with this seasonal change is something I find solace in while knowing, I guess, it will one day be brighter again. I find comfort too, perhaps, in the beginning + the end; the completion of things. Nature is confident in it’s inherently cyclical style of function + each season creates a trust with each rotation. Knowing nothing is forever is something I guess that lends itself to the ease with which we can deal with the shorter days + heavier mood of Winter. Also.. let me not forget a very serious truth too; that one little thing of the wardrobe - those who know me will know, I will take a winter coat over shorts ANY day of the year.

Something that happened me just this week was an experience I don’t know I’ve ever been even close to before. After a really positive work week where I met with new clients + continued on-going projects - both personal + professional, that dare I say.. I am incredibly proud of - I found myself, without an accustomed uncertainty that seems to permanently be fluttering around my head. Shutting my laptop on Friday post my final call of the day, it was with great calm + an internal ease I am not so familiar with that I got Winston (our fur baby) ready with his lead, popped my new BOOK into my tote (this STABLE one I’m loving) + without hesitation my legs somehow got me to the park where I seemed called to sit under a tree + actually relax to read my book. I understand this might seem incredibly basic + perhaps you’re thinking, wow this chick is so weird but for someone who’s monkey mind is in constant sh*t-chat at me that I should be doing this, that or the other, being productive at all times of the day, I found myself somewhat astonished at the level of ease with which I’d gotten there + was actually very much presently there. It was without the usual guilt or self-accusations of idleness in doing something simply for myself that I guess caught me off guard. The inner tranquility I experienced really rooted me in the moment + I found myself wondering how on earth I’d arrived at this sort of serenity on a random Friday evening. A lot of things is the answer. It’s the compilation of a whole host of varying things I’ve been doing (or working to let go of doing) that brought me to that momentary inner peace, all of which I aim to explore more openly with you here. To know this peace in the simple things, to me, is to know happiness. And it reminds me of the idea shared with me by my coach from New York around ‘blissful presence’. Isn’t that what it means to truly be alive, to be blissfully present in this moment? Friday evening definitely made me think so.

It feels as though I have to in some way round this post off in a particular way or add in some links to things I’m loving or what’s on my Wishlist but for this month, just the above alone feels correct. This series is where, as I said, I can step into my explorative self as a writer + be the person I am in whatever that looks like at any given time. And plus, this very much challenges in me my inner critic that tells me something has to be perfect for me to begin. Well here I am, imperfect but starting.

What would you begin if the illusion of perfect didn’t exist?

HSF Wellness Guides; The New York City Edition

Travel, Wellbeing 02Rebecca O'Byrne

Regular schedules + routines break while traveling; no matter how type A one is (or, admittedly I am), it’s inescapable that what you routinely practice at home - when you do it + how you implement it - isn’t as perfectly guaranteed to remain so solidly intact while away from the certainty of what you make happen each day in ‘normal’ life + trust me, even the best plans + intentions get blindsided by the natural, albeit wonderful, upset that comes with travel to anyone’s otherwise flowing schedule. And so while routine in it’s at-home version might be different while away, what does come with us is the approach we have to our own well-being + the rituals + practices that make us feel good no matter where we may be. What’s important while away is focusing on what we can do from our usual groove to make us feel our best + with that in mind, I’ve pieced together some of my favourite wellness locations + practices to try in New York City, one of my heart’s dearest home-away-from-home cities.

Clean Beauty; Ground Wellbeing

Wellbeing 02Rebecca O'ByrneComment

G R O U N D  is a newly launched luxury wellness brand I was recently introduced to + am truly loving. Focusing on artisan aromatherapy for your entire family, each product is created to awaken your senses through the beauty of + healing properties found in essential oils. Hand-crafted in small, quality-controlled batches in Cork, Ireland by Peigín Crowley, a globally celebrated curator of luxury spas, GROUND is neutral by design with each product created to encourage a sense of relaxation + grounding.

Peigín, has established a highly respected career in the wellness space as the originator + designer of high-end luxury spas in Ireland’s most indulgent properties including Cliff House Hotel, Old Head of Kinsale + Adore Manor. Her love of constructing beautiful experiences has been brought to life in her latest venture + is something you can see, smell + touch in each drop; a treasured treat in the every day rituals of self-care.

I was gifted some of the beautiful products from the range by Peigín when she first launched - the Recovery Hair Oil + Sleep Face Oil + I have been using them ever since. The Recovery Hair Oil quickly became a favourite; each time I wash my hair I gently massage the product into my scalp before getting into the shower, then after towel drying it, post shower, I put about 5 drops into the ends of my hair - again gently massaging it in. I’m particular about what I use on my hair + skin as I get older + I just love how natural GROUND products are - no gross pesticides or herbicides + each ingredient is organic (where possible) + completely sourced naturally.

One of the other products I love is the Sleep Face Oil. On the nights when I Gua Sha this is amazing, as with it’s beautiful texture, it means my Gua Sha stone glides so smoothly over my skin instead of pulling on it. Also with chamomile as one of it’s main ingredients, it means it’s a great way to de-stress your mind + body before bed. Peigín advises to rub the oils between your palms + inhale deeply before applying to the skin for an added boost to the senses - something that is applicable for the entire collection.

Since falling in love with G R O U N D products, I’ve ordered several others myself including the Uplifting Body Oil which is so divine after a lovely hot shower or bath. Our bodies skin needs that extra TLC in Winter + I‘ve found this (along with my unfailing love of Jojoba Oil) to be such a treat for dry skin + it smells so divine too.

You can find the full range, including Bath Salt, Body Oils, Face Balms, Face Oils, Face & Body Masks, Beard Oils + Mother + Baby products on BrownThomas.ie or directly on GROUNDWELLBEING.com

What Is.. Cryotherapy

Wellbeing 02Rebecca O'ByrneComment

Cryotherapy has been around for decades as an, albeit quite controversial, source of mental and physical stress relief. Benefits are said to include reduction in arthritic pain and migraine symptoms, depletion of atopic dermatitis and other skin conditions, the numbing of nerve irritation, alleviation of low mood disorders and it is said to aid weight loss and the reduction of disease-causing inflammation. That’s a hell of a lot of benefits in one treatment right? As popular as the treatment has become in the past two years though there is yet to be any formal scientific proof of all the possible advantages. Yet, despite it’s lack of FDA approval just yet, it has undoubtedly joined the ranks of high-tech skincare with many high-profile doctors and dermatologists, medical aestheticians and facialists getting behind it as a major player in anti-ageing skincare and overall health. The therapy style treatment for your skin comes in a facial form or as a whole body remedy .

A shortcut to brighter, tighter skin, the treatment has amassed a serious cult following, boosting cell rejuvenation and collagen while also stimulating the immune system; so there’s something good for the inside and the out and what’s not to love about that! Using it as a whole body treatment is often practiced by top athletes to rehab muscles and increase circulation. In the full-body treatment, users strip nude and are encased in a cryogenic chamber (similar to a tanning booth) where you are exposed to extremely cold temperatures - like say negative-225-degrees-Fahrenheit kinda cold - created by liquid nitrogen for a period of 3-5 minutes. Perhaps more popular in the beauty world though is the cryotherapy facial which has gained immense popularity in recent times among the beauty world’s elite and celebrities alike.

A cryogenic facial is similar to that of a full body treatment and can be either an in-and-out treatment with just the cryogenic element or can consist of a myriad of steps, only one of which is the cryotherapy itself. Options around the main event include thorough cleansing, microdermabrasion to give a deep exfoliation after which the freezing, ice-cold air is blown across each area of the face, neck and chin, followed by LED light therapy. Avid followers of the trend claim to see benefits of glowing skin and anti-ageing elements bringing them back for more.
