Jónsdóttir grew up in Iceland and after studying mathematics in her homeland she moved to Los Angeles to further her education, earning herself a masters in architecture at SCI-Arc. Since the completion of her studies she has worked in several other firms including an eight year stint as Vice President and Principal Designer at Dodd Mitchell Design (DMD) in Hollywood where she oversaw the imagining and execution of the Roosevelt Hotel, several Thomspon Hotels and the famed Cabo Azul Resort in Los Cabos, Mexico.
She later set up her own studio in 2009, Gulla Jónsdóttir Architecture and Design in L.A, from which she is the head of the company’s award-winning project-management based team that lends itself to the design and management of a variety of projects within the fields of graphic deisgn, branding, interior design, architecture and product design. Inspired by her travels, art and the outdoors, Jónsdóttir has been deservedly hailed as the new Zaha Hadid. Her strong ethos in design continuously pushes the aesthetic envelope to otherwise undiscovered levels while her signature creations embrace the unexpected and never falter in bringing to light a unique spatial experience in accordance to each clients requirements and conditions.
Jónsdóttir is a truly passionate visionary. Her dedication to her work sees her with an extensive collection of creations to her name, one that is ever growing with many ongoing projects in progress at any one time. Currently La Peer Hotel in West Hollywood, Roosevelt-Macau Hotel in Macau, China, a private penthouse in Manhattan and Vievage (an Auberge du Soleil Resort) in Los Cabos, Mexico.
